Marmaris is the old lady of modern Turkish holidays of cheap bars, dodgy clubs and a certain well known fast food burger joint (yes both of them!), but this once quiet and charming fishing village, that was just a small harbour waiting to be ravaged by tourism 'The Next BIG' new glittering holiday resort rival to the costa's, and as Bodrum and Gumbet exploded at the seams when Turkey holidays become the must see destination of the moment, Marmaris started to develop into the cosmopolitian holiday resort of today. Back then, Icmeler was practically unheard off (and hardly exsisted!), it was a hamlet by the sea like so many others on that coast and the only people that knew it existed were the locals themselves. But as Marmaris exploded on the scene, there was something missing, Marmaris that had been overlooked at the time of its conception, although rich with bars, varied nightlife and big hotels, been a harbour it didn't have the best of beaches for the beach lovers so the developers looked at the forgotten little village next to Marmaris and started to develop the area for the influx of tourists that were sure to descend from Great Britian and Germany amongst others.

In the past Icmeler was known as the annex end of Marmaris, the quiet little sister resort of the garishly loud elder Marmaris, which frankly is quite an undignified referral to the little resort with the big big hotels, because Icmeler IS really quite charming with some great hotels offering perfect holidays. It has a lovely crescant bay with a large patch of golden sands and blessed with lush mountain backdrop, and nestled in this little nook and cranny there is a selection of small hotels, apartments, and a sprinkling of bars and restaurants that cater to all the whims and needs of the visitors that descend every summer. Dont worry you still have the big beachfront resort hotels that fringe central Icmeler, the Mares was the first to be built in the area, followed by Marmaris Palace, but these big all inclusive resort hotels were built when there was nothing for people to do in Icmeler and thus are a reflection of the times when they were built, saying that, many recurring guests like the resort hotels, they don't have to leave the premises as they offer a good All Inclusive so there's really no point for regular excursions outside the complex, however, if like me these type of holidays are an anathema to ones senses and you prefer the intimate friendliness of the smaller family hotels and self catering properties that are scattered around Icmeler then in truth there is a range of choice to suit all cheap holiday budgets and needs. There is something to be said about Icmeler, it is more intimate than Marmaris, every one knows everything and everyone, and all visitors are on first name basis within twenty four hours of setting foot there, and recurring guests and locals that work there will greet each other warmly the next time they visit. Living in a holiday city, as I do, these are little touches that do mean something, can you imagine seeing thousands of holidaymakers every year, and remembering names hotel and funny faces a year later? I'm sure I can't, I barely recollect my name yet alone a resort full of recurring hotel names and faces.

I have to say it can be hard work to introduce the die hard Marmaris holidaymakers to Icmeler and vice versa, but those who know, are certain of the value of dipping their toes in both resorts; From Icmeler to Marmaris on a local dolmus you can traverse the distance in approximately ten to fifteen minutes, which means you can happily take advantage of the lower key lifestyle of Icmeler enjoy the pretty bustle of the cafes and restaurants without the onslaught of the bar and restaurant reps that litter the evening streets of Marmaris, whilst still taking advantage and enjoying the shopping and markets that Marmaris has to offer. These bonuses as far as I'm concerned are priceless there are not that many holiday resorts that when cloned the way Marmaris and Icmeler are, can offer a double entendre experience. Many of us will often see those staying on a holiday in Marmaris sneaking into Icmeler so that they can enjoy the wide sandy beaches and get a bit of quiet from the night before, in return you will see the Icmeler tribe at night descend on Marmaris for their one chosen night of mayhem in the old harbour quarter bars, letting their hair down and have jolly good time.
